"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. Multiple high-profile fans have also petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos repeatedly show them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following.

But Haim will always be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
